teka’t mag-i-ingles ako’t baka makarating ito kay malu at di niya maintindihan ang ibig kong sabihin:

in this article, she described how she went on vacation in greece and boracay and how she suffered from the torment of having Filipino OFWs as co-passengers in the plane. to quote:

“However I forgot that the hub was in Dubai and the majority of the OFWs (overseas Filipino workers) were stationed there. The duty-free shop was overrun with Filipino workers selling cell phones and perfume. Meanwhile, I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them.

While I was on the plane (where the seats were so small I had bruises on my legs), my only consolation was the entertainment on the small flat screen in front of me. But it was busted, so I heaved a sigh, popped my sleeping pills and dozed off to the sounds of gum chewing and endless yelling of “HOY! Kumusta ka na? At taga sann ka? Domestic helper ka rin ba?” Translation: “Hey there? Where are you from? Are you a domestic helper as well?” I though I had died and God had sent me to my very own private hell.

On my way back, I had to bravely take the economy flight once more. This time I had already resigned myself to being trapped like a sardine in a sardine can with all these OFWs smelling of AXE and Charlie cologne while Jo Malone evaporated into thin air.”

note how she makes “OFW” sound like a bad word. and how she fails to recognize the sacrifice that these Filipinos make in order to support their families and the country’s economy as well. and how, the politicians in her family, as she says she has, are the ones who should have been at work to ease our country’s economic burden.

it’s sad and frustrating at the same time when a sosyalera-fashionista like malu fernandez of the manila standard thinks she’s funny (as she stated in her follow-up article, in response to the emails her paper got because of that article) and publishes an article such as the one i am attaching in this post. such shame.

media with all its power comes with responsibilities and i believe malu fernandez has forgotten to take note that before being a diva (which she claims to be) or a sosyalera-fashionista, she is first and foremost, a filipino. if she wants to rant and whine about fellow filipinos she can do so in private but broadcasting them on printed matter is another thing.

her article is not funny, as she claims. it’s just a demonstration of how insensitive, callous and asshole-y some people can be. and this doesn’t prove that if you’re rich or come from a family holding powerful positions in the government or in the business sector, or if you’re fashionable, you also have good manners and intellect.

we demand a public apology!
